As core fasteners in the fields of construction, packaging and outdoor facilities, the steel flat-head outdoor nails (including mainstream categories such as flat-head corrugated nails) have recently witnessed a development pattern characterized by growing market demand, accelerated technological innovation and fluctuating costs. Multiple factors have driven the upgrading of the industry structure, with leading enterprises accelerating their high-end positioning. The industry as a whole is transforming towards high-quality development.
The steady expansion of market scale has become the core highlight of the industry. Data shows that in 2023, the market size of flat-head corrugated nails in China reached 4.56 billion yuan. It is expected to exceed 5.8 billion yuan in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of around 8.3%. The growth in demand mainly relies on the recovery of the downstream construction industry. In the first quarter of 2024, the new contract value of the construction industry increased by 12.7% year-on-year. The vigorous demand in outdoor infrastructure, steel structure buildings and packaging industries provides strong support. At the same time, the export market structure has continued to improve, with export volume to RCEP member countries increasing by 31%. Emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe have become new growth poles, driving the overall capacity utilization rate of the industry to rise to 84.4%.
The technological innovation focuses on improving anti-corrosion and strength, narrowing the gap in the high-end field. Baosteel Co., Ltd. successfully trial-produced nano-coated flat-head corrugated nails, with the salt spray test duration exceeding 2,000 hours, significantly enhancing the outdoor corrosion resistance. Taiyuan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.'s special cold heading steel SWRCH22A has enabled the nail body to reach an anti-tensile strength of 800 MPa level, with the bending performance improved by over 30%. In addition, the environmental-friendly coating technology has accelerated the replacement of traditional processes, with zinc-nickel alloy and Dacromet treatment technologies becoming mainstream. Their penetration rate in coastal outdoor scenarios exceeds 60%, driving the unit price of high-end products to increase by 12%-15%. However, it should be noted that the import dependence of micro-sized products with diameters below 3mm and special coating categories is still relatively high, reaching 74% and 81% respectively. There is a vast space for domestic substitution.
Fluctuations in raw material prices pose the main cost pressure for the industry. The price of cold-rolled steel strips in the upstream sector rose by 9.2% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2024. Although the price of zinc ingots decreased by 9.3% compared to 2022, it still directly affects the cost of galvanizing processing. To cope with these fluctuations, small and medium-sized enterprises generally established dynamic pricing mechanisms, passing on the changes in raw material costs within 12 weeks to the end consumers. The factory price range for standard-sized products is 85-120 yuan per thousand pieces, with the regional price difference reaching up to 30%. Headline enterprises, on the other hand, controlled the cost increase within 5% through large-scale purchasing and futures hedging, and cost management capabilities have become the key to competition.
The improvement of policies and standards systems guides the industry towards standardized development. The China General Machinery and Components Industry Association has clearly stated that during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, the focus will be on high-end, intelligent, and green aspects, with the goal of increasing the domestic production rate of high-end fasteners to 65% by 2026. Zhejiang Yueqing has released the first "driving screws" industry standard in the country, converting the empirical operation of flat-head nail assembly into quantitative indicators, helping to solve the problems of talent shortage and quality stability. At the same time, the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism and export control policies have forced domestic enterprises to accelerate the domestic production of raw materials and processes. It is expected that the industry's import dependence will drop to below 20% by 2025.
Overall, the steel flat-head outdoor nails industry is currently in a period of reorganization and upgrading. Fluctuations in raw materials and technological gaps still pose challenges, but the recovery in demand and policy support bring multiple opportunities. In the future, enterprises with environmental certification, technological advantages, and large-scale production capacity will dominate the market, and the industry concentration is expected to continue to increase.
