Recently, a set of data released by a domestic recycling enterprise has drawn attention: through a new process, 1 ton of used iron wire can be refined into 950 kilograms of high-purity steel, which is a 12% increase in the recovery rate compared to traditional methods. This breakthrough has turned the unremarkable iron wire into a "microscopic carrier" of the circular economy.
Welded wire, as a basic metal product, is widely used in construction binding, agricultural fencing, daily storage and other fields. The annual consumption in China exceeds 8 million tons. In the past, the recycling of used welded wire often faced the predicament of high processing costs and low utilization rates due to surface rust and mixed impurities. Nowadays, through the "low-temperature pre-rusting treatment + magnetic separation" technology, not only can the oxide layer on the surface of the wire be stripped off, but also impurities such as plastic and wood can be precisely separated. The processing cycle has been shortened from the traditional 72 hours to 24 hours.
This recycling model has significant economic value. Take the construction industry as an example. For every 100 tons of used iron wire recycled, 60 tons of iron ore consumption can be reduced and carbon emissions can be cut by 28%. In a certain steel base in Hebei Province, the recycled steel produced from the recycled iron wire has been successfully used in high-speed rail track accessories, and its strength index is on par with that of primary steel.
Experts say that the popularization of iron wire recycling still needs to break through the bottleneck of a fragmented recycling system. Currently, the coverage rate of iron wire waste recycling by community recycling stations in China is less than 40%, and in some areas, the non-standard model of "individual collectors and small factories" still exists. With the promotion of the concept of "urban mines", many places have piloted smart recycling bins, which can automatically sort iron wire and other metal waste through AI recognition, increasing the recycling efficiency by nearly three times.
From industrial necessity to environmental carrier, the "second life" of iron wire reflects the profound potential of the circular economy. Industry insiders predict that by 2025, the recycling rate of used iron wire in China will exceed 85%, reducing solid waste pollution by over 3 million tons annually, providing a solid micro-level support for the "dual carbon" goals.
