New Breakthrough in Recycling Scrap Iron Wire: The Recycling Economy Code Behind Transforming Waste into Treasure

Recently, a set of data released by a domestic recycling resource enterprise has drawn attention: Through a new process, 1 ton of used iron wire can be refined into 950 kilograms of high-purity steel, a 12% increase in recovery rate compared to traditional methods. This breakthrough has turned the seemingly insignificant iron wire into a "micro carrier" in the circular economy.
Iron wire, as a basic metal product, is widely used in fields such as construction bundling, agricultural fences, and daily storage. The annual consumption in China exceeds 8 million tons. In the past, the recycling of used iron wire often faced difficulties due to surface rust and impurities, with high processing costs and low utilization rates. Now, through the "low-temperature pre-rusting treatment + magnetic separation" technology, not only can the oxide layer on the surface of the iron wire be removed, but also impurities such as plastics and wood can be precisely separated. The processing cycle has been shortened from the traditional 72 hours to 24 hours.
The economic value of this recycling model is significant. Take the construction industry as an example. For every 100 tons of used iron wire recycled, 60 tons of iron ore can be saved and 28% of carbon emissions can be reduced. In a certain steel base in Hebei Province, the recycled steel produced from iron wire has been successfully used as components for high-speed rail tracks, and its strength indicators are on par with those of the original steel.
Experts point out that the popularization of wire recycling still needs to break through the bottleneck of the scattered recycling system. Currently, the coverage rate of wire waste recycling in community recycling stations in China is less than 40%. In some areas, there is still a non-standard model of "individual collectors collecting and small factories smelting". With the promotion of the "urban minerals" concept, many places have piloted intelligent recycling bins, which can automatically classify metal waste such as wire through AI recognition, increasing the recycling efficiency by nearly three times.
From an industrial necessity to an environmental protection medium, the "second life" of iron wire reflects the profound potential of the circular economy. Industry experts predict that by 2025, the recycling rate of used iron wire in China will exceed 85%, reducing solid waste pollution by over 30 million tons annually, providing a solid micro-level support for the "carbon neutrality" goal.
