Wire: The Multi-Faceted Applications and Characteristic Analysis of Basic Metal Products

Wire is a common metal product, made by drawing iron. Its main component is iron, and various elements such as cobalt, nickel and carbon are often added to adjust its properties.
According to their composition, there are low-carbon, medium-carbon and high-carbon iron wires. Low-carbon iron wires have a low carbon content, are soft in texture and have good toughness, making them easy to process and bend. They are commonly used in construction for binding steel bars and making handicrafts; medium-carbon iron wires have a moderate carbon content and combine strength and toughness, suitable for manufacturing daily items such as clothes hangers; high-carbon iron wires have a high carbon content, have high strength and hardness, but slightly poorer toughness. They are used in industrial steel wire rope cores.
According to the surface treatment classification, there are black iron wire and galvanized iron wire. The black iron wire is untreated and is generally used in places where the appearance requirements are not high and the environment is dry; the galvanized iron wire is divided into electro-galvanizing (cold galvanizing) and hot galvanizing. The electro-galvanizing iron wire has a thin zinc layer and low cost, and is often used indoors; the hot galvanizing iron wire has a thick zinc layer and is corrosion-resistant, and is commonly used in outdoor fences and protective nets.
The production process of wire is quite complex. First, prepare high-quality carbon steel or stainless steel wire rods. Then, remove the coating and impurities by peeling, further remove rust through acid washing, form a lubricating film through saponification, and then repeatedly draw the wire through a drawing machine to obtain wire of different diameters. During the drawing process, annealing is needed to eliminate internal stress and enhance flexibility. Finally, perform surface treatments such as galvanizing, copper plating, or plastic coating according to the application, and then package them in rolls or straight strips.
Wire is widely used. In the construction field, it is used for binding steel bars and building protective nets; in agriculture, it is used to build vegetable greenhouses and make breeding enclosures; in manufacturing, it is used to make components and springs; in handicraft production, it is used to shape various forms. It is a very versatile basic material.
