Steel wire, as one of the four major types of steel (plates, tubes, shapes, wires), is a reprocessed product made by cold drawing on hot-rolled wire rods. Due to its diverse characteristics and wide range of applications, it plays an indispensable role in modern industry and daily life.
1. Diverse classifications, each showcasing its own strengths
The classification methods of steel wires are diverse. According to their cross-sectional shapes, common types include circular, square, and rectangular. Circular steel wires are the most widely used, and are commonly employed in construction and mechanical manufacturing; square steel wires are frequently seen in frame structures and the production of hardware accessories. By size, ranging from extremely fine to extremely thick, each type has its specific applications. Extremely fine steel wires are used for electronic components, while extremely thick steel wires are used in large-scale projects. By strength, they cover a range from low to extremely high strength. Ordinary strength steel wires are used in construction and packaging; extremely high strength steel wires are used in high-end fields such as aerospace. By application, ordinary quality steel wires are used for welding rods and nails; spring steel wires are used in springs, musical instruments, and tires, etc.
II. Complex Processes, Creating Quality
The steel wire production process is complex, with each stage closely linked. The selection of raw materials is of vital importance, and high-quality hot-rolled wire rods form the foundation. Removing the oxide scale to prevent damage to the molds and the surface of the wire, and creating favorable conditions for subsequent processing. Drying to remove hydrogen and moisture to avoid hydrogen embrittlement and deterioration of lubricant performance. Coating treatment provides good lubrication for drawing, reducing frictional heat. Heat treatment is divided into raw material, intermediate and finished product heat treatment, improving the mechanical properties of the structure. Drawing is carried out under the traction of the drawing machine, through the drawing die to deform the wire. Drawing requires multiple passes, and at the same time, the work hardening needs to be controlled. Coating treatment enhances the corrosion resistance and special properties of the wire.
III. Widely Applied, Essential
Steel wires are widely used in various fields. In the construction industry, they are used in reinforced concrete structures to enhance strength and stability; in the automotive industry, they are used to manufacture components such as springs, wheels, and seat belts; in the railway industry, they are used to construct infrastructure such as tracks and switches, which can withstand the heavy pressure and friction from trains and ensure safe and smooth transportation; in the agricultural field, they are used to build facilities such as agricultural nets, livestock nets, and poultry cages; in horticulture, they are used to build flower bed fences, vine supports, and flower racks.
