The alloy cold heading wire rod, as the core raw material for manufacturing key products such as fasteners and automotive components, is deeply integrated with the upgrading of high-end manufacturing. In recent times, the global industry has shown a development trend of steadily expanding market scale, accelerating technological innovation, and continuously improving the standard system. China, with its complete industrial chain advantages, occupies a core position in the global market.
In terms of market structure, the global cold heading wire rod market has strong growth momentum. According to data, the global cold heading wire rod market size has reached 25.133 billion US dollars by 2025, and is expected to exceed 26.153 billion US dollars by 2032. The Asia-Pacific region is the core consumer market. China, as the largest producer and consumer, had a production volume of 4.2 million tons of cold heading SWRCH series steel grades in 2024. The demand in the new energy vehicle sector was particularly prominent, with each vehicle requiring over 2,800 pieces of cold heading fasteners, driving a significant increase in the demand for 10B21 and SCM435 and other medium and high-carbon alloy cold heading wires. At the same time, emerging economies such as Southeast Asia benefited from the transfer of manufacturing, with the total apparent consumption of cold heading wires reaching 41.2 million tons in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 9.7%, becoming a new growth pole.
Technological innovation is the core driving force for industry upgrading. Domestic enterprises have achieved remarkable results in surface quality control and performance optimization. Hua Ling Xiang Steel has developed a surface quality control process for cold heading steel wire rods. Through precise shot blasting and AI intelligent flaw detection technologies, the oxide scale removal rate has been increased to over 99%, and the defect missed detection rate has been reduced to below 0.5%. The surface roughness Ra is ≤ 1.6 μm after grinding. Internationally, enterprises such as Nippon Steel and POSCO in South Korea have continuously led in high-precision and high-strength product fields. Their product size accuracy can reach ±0.01mm, and are widely used in the aerospace industry. In addition, green manufacturing technologies are accelerating their popularity. Enterprises like Baowu and Xingcheng Special Steel have achieved a carbon emission intensity as low as 0.42 tons CO₂ per ton of steel, which is 18.5% lower than the industry average.
The improvement of the standard system lays the foundation for the standardized development of the industry. In December 2025, the national standard review meeting for "Cold Forging Steel Wire" was successfully held. The new version of the standard integrated and revised three previous versions, added nearly 40 steel grades, and optimized key indicators such as mechanical properties and decarburization. At the same time, the pre-reviewed "Steel Cord Wire for Steel帘线" standard refined the quality classification and added requirements for the C grade level, further adapting to the needs of high-end manufacturing. The upgrade of standards has promoted the increase of domestic high-end product proportions. Currently, the production proportion of high-quality alloy cold forging steel wire has reached 30%, and some enterprises' products have successfully entered the global Tier 1 supply chains of Bosch and Tesla.
Downstream application upgrades drive industry iterations. Apart from new energy vehicles, the rail transportation industry has extremely high requirements for the dimensional tolerance (±0.02mm) and surface cleanliness of cold heading wires; in the consumer electronics sector, the yield rate of fine wire used for micro cold heading screws needs to exceed 99.95%. In the future, with the implementation of the EU CBAM carbon tariff mechanism, low-carbonization, digitalization, and high added value will become the core of industry competition. Sub-sectors such as semiconductor-grade ultra-clean micro wires and wind power-specific anti-corrosion wires are expected to experience rapid growth.
Technological innovation is the core driving force for industry upgrading.
